View Full Version : Help with Ideas for Early August @ Great Guana
Our family of three (40's plus adults and 11 year old son) arrives for a week on Great Guana during the 1st/2nd week in August. We are staying in a cottage at Dolpin Beach resort. We've figured we would rent a golf car for the week, and also rent a boat for at least 3 or 4 days. We also hope to take an initial snorkel/day tour to get familiarized with the area initially, and also maybe after three or four days on our rented boat, we would additionally charter a captain for a fishing day. Any thoughts, help, ideas or links are greatly appreciated. I have been to the Abacos probably 5 times over the past 20 years with my parents/family (Green Turtle, Ramora Bay, Marsh Harbor, Abaco Inn, etc.). But this is my first juncture planning my own gig.
Thanks.

Sounds like you're totally on the right track with your plans.
The rest will flow as you get familiar with Guana and all there is to offer.
Have fun!

Please note that August 1 is the first day of crawfish fishing and usually on the weekend all rental boats are already booked for the opening of crawfish. If you book your trip in the first 2 weeks of August, book your boat rental ASAP.

Hay JohnnyCake I heard August 1 is a big day on the islands, and the mother ships pull out the boats to the diving grounds and there's lots of action on the waterfront. Do they have a "blessing of the fleet" or anything? I'd love to know more and see some pictures.
Now the new fishing rules have so confused us po' Amerkins, I don't know if a bunch of toursists will make such a run on the rental boats or not. You de boss though ... /sammie
We're now a mere 10-days from arrival at Great Guana for a week-long getaway. We've got a boat for four days of our stay. Mostly expect to snorkel and cruise and snorkel and kalik, etc. What's the scoop on crawfishing/lobstering? Are there organized trips for that? Is it the kind of thing novice abaco visitors with a boat could attempt? How do the new regs or newer loosened new regs fit in to this equation?
Oh yeah. Also, is Nippers still roasting pig on Sunday. Especially August 5th?
Thanks. Oh nam, we can hardly wait to get down there.
Yes, Nippers still has the Pig Roast on Sundays.

Sure a novice can attempt. You must be 200 yards from shore and crawfish can be taken by hand, hooker stick, or spear (hawaiian sling or pole spear). Limits if I recall are six in the boat, but six per person to take back home with you. Re-read the regs. Since it's a rental boat, a licence isn't required. NO scuba or hooka equipment in the boat with a spear, fish, lobster or anything else that may shed suspision on you. Good luck!
PS. If you see a boat anchored with people in the water, don't encroach, as folks can be defensive when it comes to possible traps or "private" honey holes that they've scouted for weeks prior to season!

Hey Hamian, tell them how you can grab them by the antlers if you're quick!
