There was da iscussion on another thread ("We really...") regarding the above. I thought I would see what kind of interest there would be. My thoughts are that the tournament could be a 2-stage event with one stage hekd somehwere on the east central coast of Forida as it seems we have a numbner of memebers that live in that area, and another stage in the Abacos. Proceeds could go the Forum itself or perhaps some charity associated wiht the Abacos.
We'll need a chairperson to organize (I volunteer to assist the chairperson) such an event. I nominate the following as possible candidates:
Sammie
Rock Steady
CR
Willy
Any thoughts?

Second by Sammie. Was that for Vice Chair or the Chair of Vice?
Oh, that's for the Chair itself. Gosh everyone needs a nice Chair.
Maybe we need to add a poll so folks can vote on our motion?
I can help if you need a Secretary - if I get some help.

Guys, we like your idea, and there seems to be some support. BUT, fishing slows down both in Abaco and Central Florida in another couple of weeks when the heat really turns on. Maybe we should talk about the fall, but that's slow season in Abaco for visitors. Just some things to think about.

Hey Doc, we're thinking next late April and early May when the fishing turns ON. It's supposed to be fun for all the kiddos, including some of us older ones.
Look, I'm already doing some of them thar secretarial duties. And no DrRalph, you can't give me "the exam."

OK folks, lots of time to plan for this one. I got some really totally silly ideas here but feel free to chime in.
Gotta have a T-shirt and if you get fish "stuff" on it well, better have a clean reserve!
Have to clear up the Florida versus Abaco thang. I would say keep it simple and see if we could get people in Late April to early May over to the Abacos for grins. I'm flex but maybe not do both.
Make it fun. There will be some serious fishermen and a bunch of yahoos who just want to eat the critters. Don't forget the shoreside folks. Fun!
Keep it small. I don't expect a huge rock'n'roll turnout and the accept should be on having lots of little parties and maybe one or two big shebangs, whatever a shebang is. Everyone is invited but we don't need a Happy Hour every single day that lasts until 2 in the morning.
Need greeters to help the confused. I was thinking it would be nice to coordinate with Cruiser's Net and help people get to ferries and airports. I wrote this one just for me!
Offshore versus inshore divisions. How would Dave Barry explain this? One can score "points" based on kind of fish and manly things like "girth," whatever that is. Sounds Medieval. Anyway, even if all are not in the Islands at the same time, we can keep track things like "points" and "girth." I mean the fish, not you gals.
Awards. Well if you actually make it to the island just to show, you'd have an opportunity to buy yet ANOTHER T-shirt. I was hoping that the old stock would sell out so you could could get vintage 2008 gear on a brand new design. Any other ideas are welcome. Badges, do we need some stinking badges for mostest and biggest fish?
The silliest music show ever with serious stuff like DrRalph and but like Sammie playing "The Bear Missed the Train" and the "Hippopotamus Blues." Yup, a jam band with borrowed amps. Ukes and Hula dancers welcome! Any belly dancers out there? :D"tiki" sammie

If I may offer a few rambling thoughts after just posting in the other thread :o :
Those of us who love to fish frequent the Abaco Sportsman but we are only in Abaco for brief periods of time. Reports from the locals are sparse. You can't blame them for keeping the dope within their inner circle. How about a sticky thread for non-Abaco reports? It keeps us engaged while not in paradise and adds some life to the forum.
The tourney sounds great and April/May seems to work. All kinds of marketing opportunities for the entry fee good causes for the profits/fillets. Gentlemen's bets (can you say Pink Skirt Chuck?) are always better anyways.
Just my 02.

Hi everyone,
I've been on the landline with "The Whisperer" several times about this subject. I believe there are some things in the works about the idea of an Abaco tourney in late April '08 or early May '08. Just a few logisics to work out. Things like moon phases, entertainment for the awards party, possible sponsers, local boys available for charters, ect....Stay tuned for further details!!
SamFamAustin
06-20-2007, 01:18 PM
Great idea, BigDad, need to have some tides and be able to moon people ... I mean certain moon phases and vector charts sometimes really do help. Of course, the wind will be impossible to predict ... we might all end up in the inshore fleet catching hogfish and snappas. Really appreciate any logistcs, too!

The full moon in May '08 is on the 20th and the new moon is on the 5th.
Typically a lot of experts say to fish three days either side of the new or full moon. I'm thinking we can have the derby or whatever pleases Texas, around the weekend of the 10th. Seems a bunch of folks may be in then...which is, to me, an important facet herein.
If the fish are in ...they're in. We can't predict the winds let alone the fish. So, let's look at the dates around the 10th...within a week or two and see if we still have any interest out there. Sammie, maybe you could run a poll since you apparently possess secretarial skills.
If we have a quorum, then CR, Willy, Chuck, Rick and me and whoever else would like to help can put a rough draft together as to what this could look like. It will probably be on a cocktail napkin.

Sound great! So lemme see, FFT = Forum Fishing Tournament or is this a Fun-Fest Tournament? Sounds good either way.
I really like the 10th, with is in that May 8-11 window.
Agreed that pelagics such as Marlin should only be catch-n-release too. Species restrictions such as on Nassau Grouper and all the other regs should be followed as well.
That raises the question on if we want to apply with the Ministry for a tournament permit. Goodness knows, even if we only has 12 fishermen who travel over, that's a bunch of money! Any ideas floating around?

We have plenty of room at our home, The Summit, on Lubbers Quarters.

We haven't firmed up our dates for the next trip yet, but we have been looking at 10 - 20 May so 1st or 2nd week in May will work for us. But you'll have to add at least three more people to the tally. We'll have at least three others on the boat with us and possibly as many as 5. This is going to be fun. I can vouch for the ease of finding the Summit. It was always the half-way point for us on our "walks" to and from Cracker P's.
It sounds like we have quite a bit of interest......this will be fun, but I do recommend we make it a non-alchoholic event......DaGoose will vouch for me when I say that I am a staunch tea totaller.........

I'll look into whatever I can "tube" over to de Abaco. I think I might need some smaller 6-foot rods because I got away from the double-jointed ones a long time ago - them Penn sticks kept breaking and coming apart at the joint.

Those do-it -yourself PVCs w/ screw on end caps work great...Home Depot or Lowe's...fifteen minutes and done...make it about eight feet and put some foam rubber in both ends with some super glue and you are set...and yeah, now I can concentrate...hopefully on the elusive yellowfin and sworddie guys.
We're excited and I'm truly looking forward to calling Abaco our home base. Can't wait, actually, and that call I'm hoping for 'bout the tuna may be just around the corner...or I'll just go anyhow and imagine I got it...

No problem, Sam,
It was one of those -26 degree days in February in '93 in Ohio. We called and the guy who established AOC..."Abaco Ocean Club" on the southern third of Lubbers Quarters said the lot we were interested in was on hold...so, we bought the one our home is on now. We had everyone at one time or another helping us get it built and really, truly, just got it right...the way we wanted, about a year or two ago. Now the missus is happy, I'm happy...'cause she's happy...etc. We built it to withstand 175MPH and it held up during Floyd which was clocked by our next door neighbor at 223 mph sustained. We've basically just fallen for Abaco as we used to spend a bunch of time on the western coast of Mexico. It's all about the fish'in...or was originally, and now it's about the friendships we've made...true and blue.
Yeah, we had a couple margaritas that day in February '93, and yeah, no one had ever spent that much for a lot back then... but hey, we are very, very, happy with our choice and decision...we've got a view to die for.
I guess the best thing is the friends we've made in Abaco. Everyone there, if you're from the states, has chutzpah...everyone...otherwise they would not be there. The local friends I've made are fantastic people...a true joy to know. I've learned so much from them, I might have to write a book...Down the road, we bought some of the surrounding property and there you have it...our own slice. Liv'in the dream...I wouldn't trade the experience of these past thirteen years for anything. They've been real.

OK, lacking anything from the Bahamian government it looks like we're on our own unless lightning strikes twice - do we need an official check in station so we can compare catches during the fishing tournament?
There are many ways to do this but it sounds like using the Internet for "bragging rights" might be too tough in the outer islands. I'm not one for loads of rules at all but do you have a clue how to decide who's the baddest fisherman?

I'm hoping for a category sort of like "most unusual." I like fishing with my brother in his 26 but he's a meanie ... I keep on catching really ugly fish and he won't let me boat them. Nope, he just hands over the dehooking pliers and shakes his head "No."
I mean I caught MORE fish, just the wrong kind. I caught a gafftop catfish, 10 pounds and a bucket-o-slime, and his does the pliers and "No" thang again. Caught something I recon called an angler fish real deep, so ugly it would make a buzzard fly backwards. I guess the "octopus incident" really got his craw though, since he squirted brother Matt a good one right when he was shaking his head "No."
"OK, lets troll on top for a while, Sammie." So then I caught the biggest one of the day ... an 80 foot shrimp boat. Dang brother says "that lure is like ten bucks get it off dat boat."
Big mistake, I should have handed him a ten-spot right there and then. So there I am drunk as Cooter Brown trying to de-hook a huge shrimp boat and the crew wakes up ... you know they REALLY didn't want to wake up because they work all night. "How about a case of Bud" I volunteer, which seemed to appease the shrimper dudes. One of them hauls this winch thang so rusty it looked like it would fall off but here comes Mr. Bait.
Whew, Matt got happy on the way in but we ran into a giant hail storm that nearly broke through our sunglasses - popped out one of my lenses. Then we got inside the harbor and ran aground in solid black mud. Ever see what happens when you use full reverse in mud like that? Looked like the Monster of the Black Lagoon.
So the gals are on the dock when we pull up in all our glory. We had shazz everywhere, mud still falling off the boat in large plops. About 20 people crowded around to witness the Black Monster dock up, laughing like fish crows. So being on show, I haul up our "catch of the day" which was a really puny Spanish Mackerel. More hysterical laughter - I still had those broke sunglasses on. It took two hours to clean up that dang boat. Why, oh why had we left all the artificial bait bags open when the fit hit the shan?
It was very fun, another day in paradise. Even brother Matt had a huge grin.

I know, laughs and I set myself up, but I've been on the water since I was about 8 years old - and never once did the "shark chum" thang from sea sickness. By the age of 14 I was running 20 lobster pots by hand in a rowed dory or with a Seagull motor and catching my own trash fish for bait - sold every lobster for a buck each unless it was a "twin" or short, which was 2 for a buck (now they're $20-60). That was up in Connecticut, not Florida or the Abacos, but I'm a waterman for sure. I just walk funny on dry land!

Sammie, did you bring a banana on that boat?
Crispin, No fair. I know about that first time thing. Caught a 180 pound striped marlin my first time out:D ...
...unfortunately, it was in Cabo where they back down on the fish and help you reel it in so I guess it really doesn't count:(

Don't tell anyone, but the smaller blue marlin like off Cabo are a delicacy. I almost hate to admit it. Went out on a panga boat and released the big one and kept 2 small; freaked the poor fellow out because everyone wants a trophy. Took them to a Chinese joint and said "you can have these just feed us some stuff."
"Dees good, better dan tuna dat small! Sit down wight here!"
Ooohhh, he was right.

Not to many places sell them anymore, but we always used handlines up north for flounder, fluke, Tommy-cod, and other bottom fish that didn't require a winch. Tarred line or twine it was, since plastic can cut right through your hand. LOL, I can recall my little brother Corey setting there on the boat and he'd say "Ugh-oh" and pull up yet another huge "saddle blanket" fish. Of course, he said "Ugh-oh" when he was fixing to pass gas so we were always a little nervous ... he was perty much a switch-hitter on his baseball signals!

We fished for many years with 30lb on TLD 25s, and most of the time we had maybe 15' of double-line Bimini, and we never brought up a rig that had a sever in one of the lines. We also used .020 coffee wire as leaders, maybe that was the difference. We catch a lot of nice dolphin, sails, and wahoo in 120-200', but that's also 'cuda country, so we don't use mono leaders. We have to run 35 nm to get to 120', it's not like Elbow or Bimini where you don't even throttle the boat up, you're fishing within 10 minutes of clearing the pass.

Man, ripped off again - I can't tie that knot worth beans. Hey can I tell ya a story? Anyway, they had lots of lobster pots down there in Florida and up on the Yankee coast. So the Prohibition smugglers would sneak in at night or in a storm and dump their booze in the lobster traps and sink them back down. Poor old lobsterman would find rum bottles in the traps and throw them in the fish hole, maybe taking a wee nip from one.
Of course, he'd be greeted at the dock with a big old silver or gold coin and asked to "keep fishing so darn good."
