Due to the posts on this subject, I thought some of you might find this article about the Costa Rican reef of interest:

it is very sad, by the time people realize this it is almost too late...or definitely too late. I hope that some day soon governments will recognize the gift they have been given in these reefs and move to protect them.

Call me a pssimist, it is getting a little too late to do anything about it, except to create sanctuaries where the damage is the least. The causes of reef decline are complex and even global warming has been mentioned as playing a part. Invasive species such as those that arrive in ship ballasts are also thought to be contributing. Point and non-point water pollution has always been suspected.

Why the helplessness? Even if we stop all the man-made CO2 being released now, the Arctic sea ice will probably disappear sometime between 2030 and 2050. Unless scientists find some "magic bullet" to cure reef decline, I would put its demise on a similar time table.
