Thanks Pat! I think I told Tony on Sunday when I called him but it'll be good to remind him. He does have a lot going on. I can't wait to see the progress on Beach Walk.

How's the weather?

Thanks again,

Tina

Tina: Now that I know exactly where Beach Walk is, I will be sure to go by and see how things are going, and take a few pix for you!

Wow Tina....you did good! I like it. (remember I liked the blue with the yellow???) Now is that the color the trim is staying? I LOVE the deck. I wish I had a Tony in my family. What a worker! Just imagine sitting on the deck drinking.....whatever!

Hi! I just got off the phone with Tony and told him how great it looks! (And of course what you all said.) The house is lavender and the trim is chartreuse. He's going to remove the old shutters so the blue won't be there. He's not sure if he's going to paint the deck and railing or stain it. What do you all think?
Thanks Pat for posting the photos. I can't wait to see Beach Walk in person again.

Hi Tina, beautiful cottage and the deck looks great! I would definitely use a clear waterproof sealer application of good quality - and not paint or stain. Watco makes a good one, others will do. Painting has to be primed and coated several times - maybe three coats - but sealer just goes on once, although some recommend a follow up for a second coat after a few months or a year. It can be sprayed (regular garden pump sprayer), rolled, brushed, and drips are OK - just don't nuke the side of the house or the plants too much. The latex version is wonderful because tools clean up in water. My trick is to hit the knots in the wood pretty good so they won't soak up water ... very nice looking wood, it should be nekked! Hope this helps. /sammie

Hi Tina,

Regarding your deck finishing , I would go along with SamFam & recommend a stain . They will not peel or flake off as they age so are much more maintenance and enviromentally friendly. A clear stain is the easiest , I would go for the product that has the best ultraviolet light protection from the sun if you deecide to go with a clear product. They are the easiest to recoat , but should be reapplied every two to three years to minimuze damage from the sun . A pigmented stain will last longer and offer your choice of colors , but will show it's age quicker and require more expertise to properly re-coat . Darker colors will fade quicker . Periodic cleaning to remove salt buildup will help prolong the life of the wood . Usually you get what you pay for when exterior coatings are involved . Follwing product instructions is a good idea . I would recommend investing more money up front & apply two coats , the initial application will last longer . Good luck , your pad looks like a great place to hang out !

This is a different subject , I have read previously that you are an artist of some type ? What materials do you use & what is your style (impressionistic , modernistic , portrait ) ?

Tim, thanks so much for the recommendations. I will definitely pass it on to Tony. He was thinking that he might stain the 'surfboards' a darker color and then clear coat the rest of the deck.

Right now, I'm taking a Printmaking class and am working on etching zinc plates. It's much different than anything else I've done and I'm really liking it, especially the linoleum block printing. I took up oil painting a couple of years ago and enjoy that alot. (I really don't like acrylics.) My style is sort of pop art-ish, but maybe that's because the projects in school have lent themselves to that style. I'm definitely not a traditionalist. I also have done alot of drawing including Life Drawing. I took a class last spring that focused on the head which was really fun. If you'd like I can send you some photos, just send me your email address. Are you an artist?

Tina, I think it would look real sharp with the surfboards darker than the rest of the deck.

My husband paints in oils also, he does not like acrylics either. I want him to do a mural like you did in your cottage. We painted our walls like a Bahama color water (one of the many colors of the water). Many years ago when we had a cottage by the ocean he went into the bedroom and locked the door. A couple of hours later, he opened the door and there was a huge anchor and anchor rope on the wall! Than he painted some regatta style boats. I only do stick people!

Angie, that's neat that your husband paints. I need to paint a large canvas for over our fireplace and I'm thinking of copying a Gauguin since we've got kind of a tropical theme going. I've never copied a master before so it might be fun!

Hi Tina ,

I don't do too much picture painting . I do faux/decorative painting . I have done some murals . I started doing commercial/residential painting , so I still some & I do all of my preperation & painting when I do faux stuff .

I do drywall, masonry, carpentry etc. , anything that has to be repaired before you paint it .

I hit something on the keyboard that changed the font .

I sent you a PM with my email address

Thanks Patti! Hope you and Mark are having a wonderful day. Just got back from a walk on the beach with my cousin. I couldn't believe how many people were out and about. We go up to my folks at 5:00 for some really good grub so I may hop on the treadmill to work off more calories. I intend to majorly pig out tonight!
