Wouldn't it be nice to have a section here to paste deleted coments from the "other" Forum. Like when a few days ago one of their moderators contradicted herself by saying they don't edit PM's, they "FILTER" them, LOL. (Aparently the filter for words like "Dr Ralph" or mention of this board.) It was later deleted when she realised she sounded like an A**. I just thought it would be a great way to show how uneven-handed with how they treat posters there.
Just a thought,

If they keep pickin' away at the oakum, they'll sink their own boat!

I'd rather not up the ante against our amigos over at AMB, since they are supposed to be our friends and yes, it is awkward if we talk pooh-pooh here.
But Half's comment about picking oakum was hysterical. I've done a bunch of that, man. For the bored, here is how you work on an old wooden boat bottom with seams.
Really old caulk all has to go below the waterline. Then there's this stuff that looks like cotton fluff - which sailors call oakum - that has to be taken out with a special curved pick. You'll see how the master carpenter beveled the wood so you could stuff more oakum and caulk back in there. A prime coat of red or orange lead paint is forced into the seams with a paint brush and no dribbles allowed.
After drying for a day or weekend, you go back in with an oakum iron and a long twist of the cotton yarn looking stuff. Twist, maul, and repeat every three inches for every single plank on the bottom. The oakum is set about 3/16 inch below the seam (depends on the construction) and must be even and tight but not too tight.
Then you caulk the planks. This is done with red lead caulk in a can, fingers, and a flexible knife. When a bunch was done the seam was raked back a little over 1/16 of an inch (because the planks might swell) and then another flat knife was used to cut off any remaining caulking. This had to dry a little but not so much.
The next day you were ready to paint the bottom if you were ready to launch, or primed if there was bare wood. We always launched with a "wet bottom" although I'm not sure about the Bahamian customs. Us youngsters always started on the bottom and worked up, so we wouldn't get paint in our hair. Meanwhile - and I have no idea how they do this - some old man would paint a 2-inch waterline. He'd paint a waterline and when that boat hit the water it floated with exactly 2 inches of red bottom paint showing.
I have no idea how they done that.

Ma Brudda...I down wit da making iron to properly space da seam and da red led to seal da grain.Oakum is tar treated hemp,it is different frum cotton caulk man. On work wessels or just a wide horn timber or garboard seam ve use da oakum foist, using cotton caulk fa erryting else, knocking it home wit da caulking iron, Don't knock it in too tite man or ven she swell,it will force da plank off da frames.Lock da seam with more red lead, then apply wateva type seaming compound u vant.I wish I had a dollar in my hand fa every foot of caulking I eva knocked in my life.lol

I went and checked, VQ. The post in question is still there in the closed thread, "any sailboats for sale." This is such an old and boring topic that I would not ordinarily bother myself with it except in the interest of accuracy. AMB is what it is, and always was. No complaining will ever change it.

This is true, it serves a useful purpose keeping tourists up to date as to where, how and when, also a good platform for the tourist industry, but the least bit of unpopular truth or controversy will lead to the deletion of a post.

No biggee Patty, but half of the posts got magically poofed after a couple of hours in classic AMB fashion. I was guilty of listing my email address within the text of my post.
I was a bad, bad girl.

I had a post deleted because I was discussing a bad experience and at the end of the posting, I complained about a Continental employee that worked out of TC airport. He is very RUDE! And I was told that it had to be deleted because they have to live there. But in fact, he has been rude and unhelpful a couple of times. I never did get to report him to Continenal. They should be aware of it!

Another "unpopular truth" that was reported for the general good of all, including tourists, deleted for no good reason.I would never say anything bad about my country that was untrue, but visitors need to keep their eyes open to honest responses concerning bad behaviour or the petty crime we may have here and those responses need to be kept in archive.

That was always the policy while I was moderating. Now I'm going to take you to task. How could Continental be aware of the rude agent if they don't hear a complaint? Talking about it on a message board won't make a difference. Get busy and write a letter of complaint!

Had something similar down here, with complaints about the Town ending up on a forum. Well, the Town didn't read the forum! Tourists must have been asking themselves "are you folks having trouble down there in La-La-Land?"
That said, except for the small regional carriers with a personal touch, all airlines are an equal opportunity offender ... and yes, I lost my baggage several times on Continental. Hah, everyday when waylaid in Maine I'd go to the little market and buy another T-shirt and a pair of shorts ... they thought I was VERY strange! Tell you what, complaining did not help. -sammie

Another thought, is to complain to the Ministry of Tourism about rude behavior.

The comments that got deleted were not those of the Moderators but those by a poster after her asking why his Private Messages had words like Dr Ralph and Abaco Forum edited out. But still the most hilarious part is the idea that filtering is not editing, LOL.
