We were at Tahiti Beach in a boat with some friends a couple of weeks ago. We talked to some people who came in a golf cart. While they were parking, a guy came out of a nearby house and told them it was private property, and that they couldn't park there. Is there any way to drive to Tahiti Beach? Do you have to take a boat?

The land is private - Beach to high water is public, go by boat.

We've done it many times, no one has ever told us we couldn't.

If you respect the rights of others - then you should not drive of their private property without permission.

I fear that CR is right, since there is no "open beaches act" requiring ingress and egress to the beach via the landside. There may be some dedicated easements in some places, like boat ramps or public piers or "historical" access points, but Bahamas common law is very clear about this. Basically, you are limited to the occupying the land below the mean high water line, which is also called the "wrack line," and one is not permitted to tresspass private property to get to it. /Sam

Well I guess we've come full circle now. Back in the 1960's there weren't any No Tresspassing signs anywhere except for a few whackos who were best to avoid, anyway. You could walk to your heart's content as long as you respected the land.

Then the hippies came along and tried to camp on private property, cut your flowers, and do unspeakable things in the bushes. Up went the signs and out went the hippies.

A generation later we have the rebellion against the yuppies. They seem to respect the property, don't cut the flowers, and don't do unspeakable acts in the bushes - actually a very well mannered sort. Perhaps it is early onset Alzheimers or something, very fashionable these days...

OK, I just read the other forum about White Sound, Elbow, and Tahiti Beach and learned a bunch about the "Papa Nasty" Wars. I suppose I had a useful contribution above but it is maybe not relevant in the least.

Unfortunately, after learning much and gaining an appreciate about how the landing and access works, the thread was closed by a moderator named (of all things) Mermaid. This was in spite of a very civilized discussion, in which many visitors like myself were quite interested.

As an occassional visitor who has witnessed heavy growth all along the Atlantic Seaboard and Gulf since the 1960's, I think the story is legit, interesting, gripping, and powerful. I still read John Macdonald novels and it seems relevant today as back then.

I apologize for the senior moment.

/SamThat's OK man! I lived and worked in the States for 7 years in the building trades.Wa is happinin here right now is just like the Yuppies I watched build their Garage-Mahals in the country/farm land of New England. It wasn't too long before they got themselves on town committees to complain about the odor and noise of the farms and wanted dem th either shut-down or limit their activity. Talk about gall!
Same story...........different place. Same crew. Errybody want eat cake..nobody want to get fat!

Thanks TruBahamian, I just wanted to say that I live in an old 1970 beach house on pilings down by Texas way, maybe 800 square feet. I'm fixing it up right nice. I bang up some boards, some others fall off or I find the rot or termites. With all these McMansions built around here the owners look mighty cross at me!
