Gorgeous orchids!
I think they are an amazing flower.
My uncle, who was in Miami (pres. of his yacht club - I never saw his boat as a kid) until he felt the strong need to leave, and go to Sebring, grew them for as long as I can remember. He kept them in coconut shells, with 1/4 cut out, and had an orchid house.
He'd hang them in his entryway (in the Miami house) and around the pool, and he'd switch them out so it looked like they were perpetually blooming.
Thanks for sharing the photos!

Hi Patty&Rudi,
That cocoanut shell is a good idea.
I have seven others that aren'tn bloom, so I got a shot at perpetual bloom!
They seem to explode when they bloom & the flowers are cool.

Wow I have respect for an orchid grower because I can't get mine to flower worth a darn. That's why I went into my plumeria (frangipangi) phase because they are so forgiving. Even crossed a few like an Aztec Gold against a common purple (smells divine). But orchids, that's like Zen or something, isn't it?

Tim, those are beautiful! Key West Orchid Society just had it's show and they had some beauties as well!

I'm always amazed at the complexity & diversity of their flowers. I think Abaco has wild orchids in the pine forests & I remember reading about some on Guana.
I actually prefer to grow stuff I can eat like herbs & tomatoes so I'm not an orchid expert.
I have gotten blooms for two years in a row from these, so I'm quite pleased.

What gorgeous flowers! Hey V....you live in the keys, how cool is that? Which Key?
Sammie, I think plumeria flowers are beautiful, isn't that the flower they make leis with? Have a nice scent right? Did not get to see many this year as we were constantly on the go or on a beach! I love the flowers and plants in Kauai, it is so pretty. The only place that I saw them grow naturally was on the road to Hana.

Sure, that's also called the Lei flower. It takes about 100 to make a nice one. They used to be heavily used in the perfume industry - and each color has a different smell. Yellows are lemony. Golds are peachy (my favorite). Whites are delicate, reds have an almost undetectable cinnamon scent, but pinks can be stronger (is "pinky" a smell?).
I love my babies, anyway. Best is to get a free cutting and root it in water, although they can run as high as $500 for show quality Hawaiians. Several friends grow them up north but take them in during the winter - they can't tolerate more then a mild frost or freeze. They are easy to graft as well, like four colors on one bush. -sam

We live right smack in the middle of the Keys, in Marathon. :)

V - those are great photos, but that brown and white and gold one gives me the creeps! A bit too tarentula-like!
Sammie - you ought to share some photos of your babies. I only have a few silk leis. :(
And make your post scratch-and-sniff, too! :D

Will do ... some flower buds are already coming out ... about a month I can shoot pictures of perfect globes of flowering plumeria.

Would love to see them. This time of year we'd give anything to see anything with a blossom!
The weather says serious winter still to come in these parts. It hasn't been winter here in 10 years, so this is a downer... :(
