well, it finally got calm enough to go outside last week with capt tom on primetime 2. caught a few and lost a few nice wahoo. then a marlin and a tuna.(after i left for home!). fished outside of hopetown on the wall.

i lost a couple of chunky grouper off the docks at "the moorings" at night, too on very light (6lb test)tackle while fishing for bait!
also found out that landing a sizable fish on a sailboat doimg 5 kt. is impossible! (at least with my unseasoned crew). sailing was good, once rain stopped.
chef at curlytails did up a great dinner with the wahoo; blackened.

...it finally laid down enough on Thursday to do it and the bite was on. The day ended with seventeen dolphin to 35 1/2 pounds.

Funny, I Googled "whiskey line + fishing" and got a whole bunch of crazy stuff, like how to sip whiskey and fly fish at the same time, fishing with (or under the influence of) Early Times, Jack Daniels, and other fine whiskey, the whiskey lines at a fishing tournament party, and of course your obligatory Whiskey lakes and rivers ... even "Whiskey River Take My Mind" by Willie Nelson.

I guess fishing ain't just made for cokes 'n' beer anymore? :D

JCT - Did you ever get to investigate Stranahan's up close and personal since you're in that neck of the woods?

Also, I thought Scotland (Scotch) was spelled without the "e" and Irish and American were spelled "whiskey"....
Uh oh Tina, we're wonderin' with a subject again....

Sorry, we're supposed be talkin' bout YFT an ono..., keep the fishing reports coming RS, really can't wait to start pulling some baits in about 4 weeks!

Real quick, Patti you're right, Scots like the traditional old spelling, Irish like an e, some American whiskey brands still acknowledge the traditional spelling (Maker's, ET and Dickel). Jim B actually has the e, my bad. "Whisky" as the officially recognized spelling in the U.S., not many of our distillers subscribe to that tradition though. Lastly, not many know but Early Times is made in reused Jack D/Old Forrester maple barrels (Brown Forman owns all 3 brands including Woodford Reserve) to impart a darker color, flavor. My fave is always Maker's when doing whiskey lines...whatever those are. Best bourbon whiskey made - Old Rip Van Winkle 23, Lawrenceburg KY from back about 5 years ago...

...of the forage out there is small.
But, think big, if you want to catch a whopper. It may take more time, but is definitely worth it.

The wind now is in the northern quadrant, and will be for the next few days. Once it swings back to the SE, we'll have some tales to tell.

RS, with you on big..hope I drive over something.

Do you think better to go dedicated 100% naturals only/small artificials pulling slow for the tuna/mahi/whitey bites and dedicate only large lure switch bait type spreads when looking for BIG - or - can I get away with a combo spread like big nasty super chugger on the center way back/combined with naturals close and a few skirted hoos in the middle? We want to catch fish on our trip, were thinking dedicated spreads for either bite was probably best overall when searching.
JCT

OOPS - just noticed a technical error on my whiskey post, I said charred maple barrels for aging ET, really are oak barrels that have had Jack in them which is filtered over burnt maple...sorry.

Depends on the boat. I nice Bertram or similar can pull a spread of seven lines although you do need three crew to work them - if you hook a big marlin all the other lines have to come inboard and out of the way.

Smaller boats can tow five more often, two on short spreaders and two corners with a stinger in the middle high pole. This would be a boat like the Contender. If you're out there in a smaller inshore boat you usually just have one or two lines out.

Now what you do with your "spread" is directly proportional to (a) money and (b) amount of whiskey or similar libation. As (a) and (b) grow, the spread gets perty complicated... :D

Then there's your teasers like rattling squid and such, which as we all know are tied to the boat on a ... whiskey line. Some balloons and kites are also flown on such a similar thang. I think ... it is Happy Hour ya know!

...that's the law, here.

I would pull a small string of birds WWB followed by a cedar plug or a bullet.

On the flats, I'd put something heavier, say four ounces or so, with meat on at least one.

On the outs, I'd put a blue and white islander w/ a ballyhoo on one side, and a purple and black sea star w/ ballyhoo on the other.

I believe in teasers...suit yourself...my guys are gonna kill me in the morn'in for shar'in.

Those Islanders work smoking hot down here in our part of the Gulf ... I am surprised you let that one out, old boy. Ugh let me guess, the blue and white, right?

Pssst ... a wind-on for top-shot and a short wire for the leader ... need a Bimini Twist of Australian braid for that ... oh no I let the cat outta the bag!

I fished with some of the guy's at the canyons off Ocean City last season. They had just started using down riggers at the corners and were tickled with the results. Half of our YFT catch came from 60' down.......
