View Full Version : New projects for Bahamas
Looks like there won't be a shortage of rooms available in the Bahamas .Got this from the Nassau Guardian this morning.
The Balmoral residences, a 22-million dollar residential community on Cable Beach; the Hermitage Estate, a 428-million dollar investment to construct a 200-room five-star hotel in Exuma; and the South Abaco Land Development, a more than $1 billion investment to construct a 250-room hotel in Conch Sound Point, South Abaco.

Pat, I think we all need to chip in and buy our own deserted island. Only need a bathroom (and that washer and dryer!!!!).

Given the popularity of Cay Sal Bank among divers and fishermen, one has to wonder when, not if, it too will be developed.

Ah, I've always wanted my own Banana Republic. We could all take turns being King and Queen for a day or so, wouldn't that be nice? Forum Cay has a certain ring to it, no?
And instead of a golf course we'll invent a new game with balls that float and you have to hit the ball around the Cay on the sandy beaches and rocks, with a definite "water hazard" which has to be played as it ... umm ... drifts away (which is why the ball floats). More like polo with rubber sticks and a whiffle ball. Let's be creative here and make it a beach & water sport.
Just a few hurricane-proof Bahamian houses and some "snore boxes" and piers, low density stuff, that's all. Well, except we need laundry and a state-of-the-art water treatment system. Only real Bahamians would run the Cay and do stuff called "work" but what a dream. Our own weekend pig roast! You think somebody would give us an undeveloped cay just to save it from the Maws of Heck? -sammie

Sinfield comes to mind....
Early in episode kramer hitting Golf balls on the beach, making distinct noise"Gounk" as ball hits water
cut to scene at diner
George:" and there I was staring into the Giants Blow hole, when I saw this"....Pulls ball from Pocket...
Kramer:"Is that a Titelist?" look of shock and suprise
Love that episode..but brings up the point do we really need to put anything more in the ocean?

We hope folks don't confuse the last one with the development in Schooner Bay. Night and day on so many levels.
The folks doing Schooner Bay made a nice contribution for a new fire truck for BPS which we urgently need and cleared fire breaks without being asked. (Spent most of yesterday with our neighbors fighting more fires -- got lucky and no homes damaged but it was close in a few places).

Hmmmmm...... $4,000,000 per room. I'm sure that'll work.

Ah, Hank, you're off by a decimal point. But if you look at the grandiose plans posted previously, you'll see it's a lot more than just a hotel :(.

Al,
Maybe that's why my fish always measure a little long, but a billion divided by 250 is $4 mil. Granted, there is more to a development than just rooms. A good example is Emerald Bay (Great Exuma). We were offered a tour the week they opened for business, not the grand opening. We wanted to see the marina, but they said no because it wasn't finished. The real reason was that they were still blasting the channel for the 200 footers to get in.

Hi Hank,
Sorry, I was being facetious and the point I was trying to make (not very well) was the proposed hotel pales in comparison to the rest of the stuff. It's huge and will forever change life -- maybe some for the better but we don't think so -- in South Abaco. We're all for the Schooner Bay development because we think it will permanently enhance life for the locals at some - but minimal - effect on the natural beauty of this place.
Please accept my apologies if I offended you; that sure wasn't the intent.
Cheers -- Al

Not at all, Al.
I can't imagine that Conch Sound Point scope anywhere in the Bahamas, much less on Abaco. Ginn Su Mer may be a rival, but West End is a day trip for the folks he is marketing to. The Schooner Bay development appears appropriate and I hope it turns out well. There is a big difference in (developer) approach between "two to three year sell out" and appropriate absorption, which may be twenty years. It takes commitment and deep pockets to not have to capitulate when the market slows for awhile.
Do you think they will get a density bonus for providing 20% affordable housing?
