View Full Version : thefts in general

As a Bahamian, I am sorry for those who come to our / my country and find themselves on the wrong end of a theft. I'm embarassed. Fishing poles in MHH, Ipods Iphones and laptops in Hope Town, cash anytime anywhere. It's wrong wrong wrong. We really do have a very safe and peaceful community here in Abaco; but we do have to admit that like any society there (usually) is a bad element.
OK - I logged onto The Rant because my point is that punishment almost never matches the crime. It's either too harsh or too soft. I like the Saudi Arabian punishment for theft - cut your forkin hand off. They (the criminals) would hate it if I was in charge of justice. Any crime that involved a firearm would be automatic death sentence - with the same gun they were in posession of. And there are WAY too many Bahmaian criminals roaming the streets - mostly in nassau or Freeport, but some in Abaco too - who just don't deserve to be among us anymore. The real problem is that The Bahamas doesn't have enough jail space. People who should be locked away are forced to go free because of overcrowding. I'm sure alot of you from other countries might feel the same about your own justice systems. And you tax payers HATE to pay for "3 hots and a cot" for those freaks. I do.
I'm sorry you guys got ripped off. I really am.

I am sure the US could lease the bahamas some cells at Club Gitmo. That should scare even the major offenders away from crime... and those who Gitmo doesnt work on can take a vacation to Egypt... they can torture a confession out there.

Are you kidding me? Those intered at Gitmo have it MUCH better than those guarding them, and at least ten times better than our deployed troops!!

Hey is that a yacht club like what Ernest Hemmingway used to belong? Cuba was beautiful back in its heyday when cigars, casinos, and blue marlin ruled that part of the universe. His short novel 'Old Man and the Sea' was based on a real story about the locals who would fish there from small dinghies, using handlines instead of the fancy sports gear the rich people had. Possibly the best piece of writing ever written by an American. My peaceful digression is being done on purpose ...
And don't worry, Stone, you don't have to apologize about some random theft or something that pricks your Bahamian pride. Stuff has been "disappeared" throughout the ages and it is just a fact of our existence. It was a very nice gesture though, sir. -sammie

Growing up this was the way almost everyone fished. They had a bunch of line wrapped around a soda can and would unravel yards of it all around them before casting out. Never seemed to get their lines tangled. Not me though, I bought a rod and reel from Woolworth's and didn't care who laughed at me.
I always marveled how the locals could fish with a handline and never cut their hands when pulling in a fish. I remember being in awe once as I saw a guy pull in a young shark (perhaps 4 to 5 ft) and never once winced in pain as he hauled the line in hand over hand.

My statement was a joke... about lack of cell space. NOT about the problems that some people have with gitmo or American version of "torture".
And the comment about egypt is speaking about the fact that they can pull your legs off in egypt.
I try to leave politics out of comments.

As a kid we used handlines for large flounder called "fluke" off New England. This was a three-strand string that was fairly fat, with some preservative like tar or something. Manilla, maybe? Anyway, it is a really cool way to fish, "mano y mano."
You can't use mono or braided lines because you could seriously hurt yourself. The next trick is to never, ever take a wrap or loop around your hand, since a large shark could pull you right into the water. You work the line up like hauling a bucket up from on old fashioned well. You learn when to give the fish some line instead of letting it rub through your hands, which is quite painful.
Today, most all billfish boats do handlining to a certain degree. That's because of the leader on the lure or bait, which stops 6 to 25 feet away from the boat because of a large swivel that won't pass through the rod guides. The "leader-man" had to haul in the last few feet of mono by hand using special gloves. When close, the gaff-man lands the fish.
Pretty good hijacking job, huh Krup?

All points made and taken, can we proceed without further references to Gitmo and Egypt, please.

If no one has knowledge of Fox Hill prison, those sentenced would BEG for interment just about anywhere else.

I remember a few years ago reading the Guardian. In it's manner of writing that is so quaint to the watered-down US newspapers, they were reporting on three convicts sentenced to death. The ultimate result was that at Fox Hill Prison, one was hanged, one sentence was commuted and one prisoner committed suicide. For some reason, I found that intruguing.
