I've been meaning to rant for over a week about a terrible accident that could easily have been much worse. A four wheeler had a collision with a pickup truck that ran (ignored) a stop sign. The driver of the four wheeler lost, but thankfully not his life. A shattered knee is pretty bad, but it highlights a serious issue affecting GTC. Since the road to the North End was paved it has been the Daytona Speedway for too many careless drivers. We have long worried about someone being killed on a golf cart or bike by these manic drivers.

Since this accident there is rumored to be a petition circulating on GTC for the installation of speed bumps on the road outside of town to the Club. FINALLY! This is the most judicious and rational solution. It forces vehicles to slow down and avoids unlikely traffic enforcement as an option. I would love to see a speed bump on the road in front of our driveway where we often see cars doing over 60mph wizzing by! Also put speed bumps in front of the entrances to public beaches like Ocean Beach and Tommy Russel Road, and other areas where incoming traffic could be at risk. (OR just let the roads really deterioate and pot hole up so everyone has to slow down.)

We must stop the reckless driving. We are lucky to be able to address the issue before some is killed. To my knowledge no one has been killed on the roads of GTC- lets keep it that way. Sorry for the somber tone. We're praying for the community to solve this serious issue with a sensible and practicle solution- like SPEED BUMPS.

I think speed humps are a great idea but am divided on the issue, since the speeders don't seem to drive them like "normal" people such as you and I. A speed hump is a traffic calming device used to create an small elevation so that when warned, the driver must slow to less than 15 MPH. Speed "bumps" are smaller in width and tend to have less of a shelf life because of maintenance issues. They work great.

However, they cannot prevent stupidity and drunkeness. Over the last few years on South Padre Island, Texas, we have people crashing right over speed humps, barricades, and through warning signs right into the water. A few lawsuits have been filed because the roads features were construed to actiively "harm" the driver, which caused some liability issues - in spite of clear need and justified reason. Our Town Lawyer has been having second thoughts about having 400-pound concrete planters filled with a thousand pounds of topsoil, since that would outright kill them in a collision instead of letting them blast into the water or somebody's house, like normally. [Bear with me, I do not make this stuff up.]

It is a great idea, AbacoBrad, yet I fear that this solution might not solve all the problems at hand. You can put in a speed hump with a sign and all kinds of precautions, but that just might be a cause for people to launch them and their vehicles into the Netherlands. I'll never forget asking the town and health department to put up a "no dumping" sign and seeing a dozen bags of trash right under the sign the next day. I certainly hope things are better in GTC. /Sam

Where I come from "Road Rage" was never heard of until "Traffic Calming" was invented. Rather ironic, I think!
