Check this out - I posted the thread below on both this board and another board in the Abacos. I think this is a really a simple question about a charge on rental properties. Below this post, I want you to read what the moderator of the other board said was the reason they deleted it!!!

My Post

Questions Rental Property Owners
As many of you are aware of the issues I have had the owners of Ocean Breeze Cottages.

My questions is as follows, "When you rent your property, do you have to pay a "Resort Fee" to the government?"

The reason I ask, is they charge a 15% Resort Fee. yet I have not been assked to pay that any other rentals I have used.

Thanks,
Larry

Their post about the deleting of the post:

Hi Larry,
We cannot get involved with legal matters on this message board. I hope you understand why it is in both yours and our best interest to NOT allow posts that may end up in a court of law. Anything you post here can be used against you. I am trying to protect both you and us.
Thank you for understanding.

This is so bizarre - I don't know any other word to use. Censorship at it's finest.

Thank you for having this open board. I am not trying to maliciously trash anyone. I have a situation I am trying to get handled and I am asking questions.

The Ministry of Tourism has been great and they are looking into this on my behalf and even if I don't get my deposit back, maybe I can prevent the owners from having issues with other such a I and and others have had.

Thanks again for your board,

Larry

Oh well - I just had my priveledges taken away from me on the other board.

And I wish I really had done something bad?

I guess your stuck with me here!

Thanks

Larry, I gave up long ago trying to figure out the motives of the "other board". There is no rhyme or reason to the things they do. Glad you made it over to the Forum, where we are all free to discuss things like grown ups.

Hey mon, over here we don't see the purpose in dissing the "other board." Be happy. We can co-exist. You can research some of the history about why Abaco Forums was invented, but still we hold no malice. Things started getting interesting about the time of the 2004 and 2005 hurricanes.

So if you want some cool talk, feel free to pose your questions here like "I didn't have all that great of a time doing it this way, so how could I make it better next time?"

I guarantee, you'll have loads of Aba-holics post on that! Even clowns like me! ;)

Larry, I replied to your post 'over there' and didn't get a delete notice. I'd ask Gov't. if Ocean Breeze Resort is paying the "resort tax" for each time it's rented, and if so, ask for a refund because you didn't stay at their "resort". Maybe that 15% is a built in gratuity. This thread is better served in the 'Rant' section, though.

What Sam says is true. Please refrain from the "dissing" of other message boards. Not every message board is the same.

Just like with anything else. If every one was alike and followed the same path, it would be a pretty bored world wouldn't it?

Larry, this is why me and others steered you here in the first place.

I am still learning my way and I appreciate everyone being so patient with me.

Please understand Larry I am making no judgments, but maybe if you had asked that question as a generic one, without naming an exact property you might have met with a more open reception.

Just a thought!

Thanks for the input Ed. You are probably right, but you wouldn't believe the number of PM's I'm getting on this issue.

So the answer to the question is there's no resort tax? We're about to 'resort' to a place on land rather than a charter boat and want to be prepared :)

Kim, do you mean on private rental houses? Per the comments above, there's no firm rule. Best way to know is to ask the owner/agent if there are any additional fees aside from the rental costs.

If you're talking hotels or resorts, there's definitely some tax/levy, though it seems to range from 10% up to 25%.
