I can ask the airline, but I would rather ask the seasoned Abaco traveler...Has anyone been able to carry on a small ice chest anymore? And what are the checked ice chest procedures now. Last Abaco travel date was July. Thanks.

Unless you are bringing something for a special diet there is everything you would want here. The prices are not an issue as if you bring a cooler and get charged for overweight baggage you will be upside down. Have your taxi wait while you shop on the way from the airport to either the boat rental. If you are staying in one of the settlements with a groocery store you can shop during the week there to supplement what you need.

I travel by air domestically quite a bit and think you'd have an issue w/ the new gel/liquid rules that allow you to carry on one quart sized resealable bag that is comfortably (not overstuffed...open to individual TSA interpretation) filled. Your issue could be w/ the frozen liquid quantities in your carry on cooler.

Our solution for a long trip where the extra supplies in a cooler will be quite beneficial is to spend night one in SE FL then fly day to PBI to MHH packing the cooler that day, letting TSA inspect it, duct taping a larger (careful on size others know better than I) cooler shut following inspection and checking it.

If Jack will let me check bags, don't worry! Clint and Jack are wanting to just walk on. They are killing me.

Frozen liquids/gels could become an issue with TSA and airlines. The solution is simple: Do not have one of those, and replace them with frozen solids, e.g. (do not laugh) spinach, peas, carrots, meat, tomato sauce or any other sauce. This idea originated in Canada (if I remember correctly).
On the other side, you will be able to get your supplies in Abaco upon arrival. Why schlepp your ice chest around and pay excess luggage charges? Please remember, this ice chest eats into your luggage allowance.

Dana - I was wondering what the TSA rules were for carry on 26 oz bone-in rib eyes. If you find out tell me. Last year we sent some frozen rib eyes in our checked bag (vacuum sealed and wrapped up in clothes - no "freezer-gel" packets). The bag never made the Florida connection.....36 hours later Albury's delivered our bag and guess what..the steaks were just beginning to thaw..cold on the surface and frozen in the middle...Pat and Sidney were a very happy couple.

Good luck..we are going to try and go this Thanksgiving lean and mean...

Hey! You're not helping me here!!!:p We can't get those beautiful, fresh, Texas Rib Eyes ANYWHERE in Abaco!!! Sidney and I ate those steaks and thought we died and went to heaven! :D
Back when I was coming to the Abacos to visit, we would bring frozen steaks wrapped in newspaper and when we got here, they would still be frozen. Newspaper is a great!!! But I do understand what you are saying Floridacargocat. As usual, great information to us all.

Pat: I got the mouse! Had to go to PO. Not too bad. Will tell you about it when we get there.
No traditional Turkey dinner for us. May just have to have cracked conch for T'giving!

Dana, we used a soft-sided cooler on rollers, and had our items frozen solid. We flew from Denver to Orlando and rolled the cooler on as carry-on (no liquids), stayed overnight and then caught a flight to the islands the next morning. We put ice on the items in Orlando just for insurance, and emptied it the next day. When we arrived in Marsh Harbour, they were still frozen solid. We also used the cooler a lot on the boat for rum thangs and Kalik. When we left, we just folded it up, and stowed it in our suitcase for the return trip. Hope this helps, and maybe Pat can get her steak and eat it too! :)

I have my little ice chest that has frozen sides. It stores in the freezer and then fill it up. I just would hate for it to be confiscated. I think we will do it anyway and see what happens. Results ot follow after Thanksgiving. Marsh Harbour has become so well supplied since Floyd. It is amazing. Price Right even has a dedicated shelf for wonderful oriental seasonings and condiments for your daily dose of pork and chicken. But Texas steaks have to be shared!

Well doesn't this just take the cake, I mean steak? Maybe FloridaCargo dude has some ideas because I know a bunch of meat and chilled/frozen products is flown to the Bahamas every day.

The is my second attempt at this message because I wanted to glorify Texas ranch-grown beef shipped cold and never frozen - stuff so good you hardly even need a knife. Don't tell my doctor, but I've been known to eat it darn near "Tartare!"

So if I buy a quarter of a cow and ship it over when I visit my folks this spring, will I have any helpers? Myself, those filets are MINE! /Sam

So Sam......you'll be on Dickie's Cay this spring and you'll have FRESH BEEF???? HMMMMMMMM!!!!

SamFamAustin

Technically I don't think I can sell any if I ship a bunch, so I would have to do one better than free beer and GIVE AWAY FRESH USDA PRIME BEEF FROM TEXAS. I hesitate to say more until I work out the specifics. Of course, if it doesn't work out we'd love to visit and you can roast and rib me in high fashion if you so desire!
Sam

p.S., isn't there an Albury that can help of the shipping end?

Excellent, I've bookmarked that. But can I ask a side question? They mention that they monitor marine VHF channel 16. Here in the states that's the emergency channel like for mayday and stuff and the Coasties monitor it closely. You can get in trouble for gossiping there. So is 16 different in the Abacos? /Sam

patw

Yes, 16 is the hailing channel and then you switch to a working channel to talk.

This might help.
