Flew out of Logan on a direct flight to West Palm Beach, flight was nice. We brought a small playmate cooler which I wrapped with 2 bungy cords. I put 2 frozen steaks, frozen ravioli's and some sauce with meatballs. I wrapped everything in aluminum foil and filled the airspace with newspaper. It worked wonderfully. We had about a 1 hour layover in West Palm before we boarded our contintental flight into marsh harbour. Well I almost @#$!! my pants when I saw the size of the plane. A little 9 seater. I am not that good on flights, so needless to say I was scared. The pilot was about the same age as my son, like 18!!! So we landed in MHH airport and I just loved seeing that crashed plane near the airport, made me feel so much better. I thought the airport was a zoo! Trying to get a cab! We felt a little lost because it was our first time. But we got a cab and went to solomons for a little food and drink before catching the ferry to Guana Cay. The weather was very windy when we arrived. The ferry ride was a rockin and rollin, with water splashing up over the windows.
When we arrived on Guana Cay, Lubin met us on the dock to take us away to Dolphin Beach. What a beautiful place we had rented for the week. It was a nice cottage on the ocean with beautiful views. Standing on our deck you literally had to hold on or you would get blown over! I have never seen such huge waves, they had to be 10-15 foot swells! even larger at times. They rivaled the waves on the north shore of Hawaii.
We wanted to explore and since it was late afternoon, we took the free bikes at the resort and rode around the island. We liked that.
The next day we woke to windy, cloudy weather. So we went and rented a golf cart from donna sands for the week. We explored every nook and cranny of the island. We especially loved going to the now closed guana seaside, we felt like we were the only ones on the planet. The beautiful dock overlooking the sea of abaco. We read that Bakers Bay bought the guana seaside for the workers to live at. We often went there every day near sunset to be alone. We tried to explore more of Bakers Bay, but the security guard wouldn't let us past the gate. I have mixed emotions about that project.
Well we headed to Nippers for the Sunday pig roast! There were only about 6 people there, I think the rough seas and weather had something to do with it. Loved the frozen nippers! Had a bunch, hung out and met some wonderful people.
Went to bluewater grill for supper, what a lovely place, and great food. We went a few times over our stay and met all the locals, who frequented there and they were just great. Didn't get sick of the food, as every dish was fantastic.
The next day it was windy again and had some showers. Rustin at Dive Guana said he wouldn't let us take our boat that we rented, we'd get killed out there!! So we, explored the island some more and headed out to find where we could watch the Patriots game that night. We ended up at Guana Sunset, Jerry the bartender, we miss you!! Jimmy and his wife who run the place are fantastic. Jimmy and I shared the same b-day! We celebrated hard on Tuesday!
Because of the weather, my husband and I became professional drinkers on this trip! We normally don't drink too much, but we found that there was not much else to do when the weathers bad! But were not complaining
We rented movies and watched them while it rained, made it to Nippers during the day and met some more wonderul people who have second homes on the island. Not to many vacationers on the island, just the second home residents. My husband and I truly enjoyed having Guana to ourselves. We felt like we knew everyone and saw the same people almost every day. Donna Sands said that in the high season there could be up to 95 golf carts on the roads and you have to make reservations for everywhere!! I don't think I would like that.
Finally on Friday it got sunny and we booked a trip snorkeling with some other people that were staying at DBR. We spent the day out on the sea and I was finally in heaven. I loved the sea of abaco an the ocean snorkeling, it was beautiful!! I was very disappointed that we didn't get to use our boat, but the weather wasn't cooperating. Maybe next time.
My one complaint was when the weather calmed down the nippers came out and I mean those nasty little no see ums. My husband wasn't effected by them, but man oh man, My legs got attacked and at night the itching was intense, almost made me cry. They itched for a week after I got home. Thats why all the locals where long pants at night. I learned my lesson.
I think when we go back, I would like to try staying on Elbow Cay, we met alot of nice people that were staying there and they say the bugs are less over there.
Our flight was fine on the way home, no complaints with Continental at all.
P.S. if anyone knows who the PeachCombers are! Your house is turning out to be beautiful!!!! Can't wait to see it finished.
A word of advice. We did not bring enough ones( I mean one dollar bills) They are nice for tipping people for the incidental stuff, the cab driver, the young girl who carried our groceries, etc!!
