Last summer manatee were sighted as far away as Texas, St Louis, and New England. I was wondering if any have been sighted near the Abacos?
Oh, as Dr, Ralph noted with the porpoise, these devils can be a wee bit frisky, too. See http://www.hornymanatee.com/

yup, there used to be, but not last summer for some reason...we always figure they are either the really smart ones or just "wrong way Corrigan", anyway they attract a ton of attention when they get here and everyone feeds them lettuce and fresh water. Man O War had a resident for awhile there, I think 2 years ago---hmmmmm, come to think of it not since the bad storms that culminated in Wilma....welcome to the Bermuda Triangle!

SamFamAustin,
I have seen Manatees both in Hope Town, and Cherokee Sound.
Manatee need fresh water to drink, so how they made it this far I don't know.
A friend in Hope Town would put his garden hose in the water and the Manatee would come drink from it - pretty cool!

Thanks Pattie and CR I'd love to hear more!
When the one came near here, 30 miles north at Mansfield TX, a guy was washing down his boat after a day of fishing and this HUGE manatee came up slurping down that washwater like no tomorrow. So he just turned the hose loose overboard and called his buddies and the newspaper - he was a very happy camper. :)

We have tons and tons (sorry for the pun) of them up here in the FL big Bend. They are really cool and a story of a great comeback. Despite what some may say to further their own political agenda, they aren't even clost to being endangered anymore. Interesting to note that they show up in the Bahamas and Texas, I doubt those manatees are included in any sort of count.

It is truly neat to hear them come back, when everyone is saying the oceans and bays are dead.
Now Dyn0d, how'd you get that manatee to squirt water straight up like that? I mean can you imagine walking innocently along the dock and have one of those brutes get sneaky and hose ya? Not fair!
Sure wish I could do like that somehow ...
