Spring break here in SPI is maybe less numbers as usual, but makes up for it in sheer madness, screaming kids, boys peeing everywhere, loud exhausts, cop sirens, circling airplanes, and traffic jams that would be the envy of the most congested cities of the world, like Bangkok. Arggggh, a spring break rant this is.

By noon the islanders are hunkering down like an impending hurricane, with beer, food, ice, and necessities lardered and the hatches battened down. We tried a walk on the beach and a group of girls shouted at me to SHOW US YOUR BOOBS. Ahem, I'm a pretty timid 50 year old man, ladies, please!

I sure hope the Abacos and Nippers isn't swamped like this - I think Daytona tried to outlaw spring break pretty well. But on the bright side, next week the madness will taper off pretty fast. There, I got that off my, err, chest.

Every year we see fewer breakers in the Daytona area. Last week they estimated about 5000, this week it might be 10,000 or so. That sounds like a lot, but it's a far cry from the 50-100K we used to get on a busy weekend.

The cops are doing something different with underage drinkers this year. If they aren't otherwise misbehaving, they get a "citation," and if they're able to pay the $218 they get off with no record and the parents aren't notified. Not sure I think this is the best way to handle this, but the cops say it frees them up to handle the heavy stuff, like guns, fighting, and drugs.

Today the kids just walk around with drinks at the motels, even on the street. Back in the day, we would buy a can of Coke, pour out a couple of inches, fill it back with rum, and nobody noticed. If you keep your head down and your mouth shut, it's amazing what you can get away with.

Y'all are so great - feel better already. DrRalph the going price for spring break Misdemeanor C "what happens on SPI stays on SPI" is close at $267.

Winds are expected to build some nice 5 to 6 foot waves, at which time I can show them I'm nuts, and hopefully won't lose my surf trunks.

Why does that ALWAYS happen during Easter Holy Week?

30 years ago i used to love spring break. Groups of girls used to come to stay on Elbow Cay for a week at a time. And the 'Mob', of which I was a member, were waiting like a pack of predators.
This week, my 19 year old daughter is on spring break in FL. And I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Here in Cocoa Beach, Fl. I have noticed a spike in traffic on A1A from Ron Jon's to downtown & near the beaches. I assume it will stimulate things one way or the other.

You are a very, very funny man with a dry sense of humor! ;)

Shall I "make that call" to my parents and turn them loose on Guana? Living on Dickie's Cay and MOW they do need to blow off some steam ya know, and us Wells are legendary in that regard. :p

Bucket o' Steam-Shifter for Table 9, stat!!!!!

What used to be shunned, is now welcomed with open arms.

The youngsters seem to be happy here, and the merchants seem to be happy that they are - my, how things have changed!

Anyway, it is good to see the students enjoying themselves on the beaches and at restaurants/bars at night.

Is is my imagination, or are they a bit more subdued this year? When I was young enough to chase after the young lovelies, they seemed to be a bit more lively! I guess time changes everything.

Corey Smith is a young artist from the Athens GA area (UGA). My kid's turned me on to his music and I love it. This is a free download from his web site, this song says it all about the old times Papa!
