The Old Bahamas thread sparked my imagination quite a bit, especially since I'm working on documenting some of the old beach houses on our little Island in TX. http://spihistorychannel.blogspot.com/

Many of the photos I took were what we call "wrecking ball bait" because the land is worth more as a custom ranch house or condo. I was wondering if folks were doing anything with preserving the memory of old structures in the Abacos? Historical houses and commercial establishments are probably more organized like in settlements ... ones that survived the hurricanes, that is.

Anyway, this kind of historical thing generated a ton of traffic on my blog-thang and the reaction was universally positive ... except when folks thought I had finished the collection and asked "but why didn't you include THIS old house?" Have fun, be merry,

Sam,
Next time on Abaco, visit Cherokee Sound and see what was done with the old schoolhouse. It was designated for removal but the residents raised their own funds, invested their own sweat equity and rebuilt it and turned it into a beautiful building designated the William Walter Sands Community Centre after it's most famous headmaster and community leader. In fact, many of the residences in Cherokee are an ongoing work in preservation, pushing 100 years plus! This is also true in many of the settlements, but it's the people themselves that have to preserve these buildings as there is no help from Gov't. agencies.
