I'm really deflated, bummed, and need to rant. Down here on our sandbar off Texas, the City Code Enforcement ruled against all dogs at the beach bar I frequent. It's now a $500 fine if you get caught. No more walks on the beach, dog bones magically appearing from behind the bar, pots of water to slake the thirst, and all the puppy love. I mean my dog Mala thought she owned the place. Talk about the end of an era - imagine if Nippers went "No Dogs Allowed"? I am quite depressed and didn't need this just before Memorial Day Weekend. Oh. Well.

Sorry...Got ta tell ya. I think thats great. All bars should do that. Critters should be left at home. Nothing but trouble, or asking for it. It is only a matter of time before something happens. The only critters I want to see at a bar should be owned by the bar owners.

Not to be disrespectful, but usually the dogs have better manners than the patrons do.

Hey Sammie,

We're with you all the way on this one. Really, a beach bar in South Padre not allowing dogs? You'd think the Council thought it was a fine French restaurant. No...wait...last time we were in Cannes every really good restaurant not only allowed dogs, they were more than welcome. Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Cheers -- SusieAndAl

Thanks Susie & Al, I'm starting to come out of my funk. Sure, I admit that most places shouldn't have dogs, especially restaurant-bars. But this one has had dogs continuously since the early 1960s. It was special, a piece of history, a little outside Tiki bar is all. Things change, and I guess I should accept that. And for you dog-lovers, my poor baby was crushed when we walked the beach and went right past our favorite haunt. My arm is still sore!

I don't know if the puppy wanted all the attention or treats, or if she wanted me to have a beer. But them days are over and gone now. Enjoy life as much as you can before they take the fun stuff away from you...

Same ole story... We all have to pay for negligent and abusive actions of others at some point in time!

Whatever happened to an establishment setting their own rules? If a bar wants to allow pets, then they should be able to allow pets in. Why does gov. have to get involved in everyone else's business? In January of last year a state wide smoking ban took effect in all businesses in Illinois... I still don't get that one... If you don't like the smokey environment than go to a non-smoking bar. Now the ban has moved the smoke from inside to outside on the sidewalk. Just what I want when running late at night, groups of people standing on the sidewalk in a nice thick haze of smoke that I am then forced to run through.

And MotuIti you have some of the best websites on the net! :D

Your dog's expression seems to tell it all! Like "What?????"

I remember one time at the Sunset Beach Bar (Now Grabbers) there were several dogs there on leashes, including Stanley, the killer bichon,. It was a mess they were growling and snapping and getting all tangled up until we let them off their leashes. Then they were fine, they settled things for themselves. That being said, I know that the Jib Room had to put their foot down on dogs a few times. The owners were picking them up and setting them on the tables or bar. Not the dogs' fault, just stupid owner tricks. We probably wouldn't have found our way home at night a few times without Stanley to lead the way.

My son had a "stanley" a reddish brown dachsund (sp). We spoiled him so bad. He is no longer with us....he was like a grandchild to us.

I'm so sorry. I know some folks that couldn't stand the loss of their dog, like it was family, they never got another one.

But I will say with well-mannered dogs at placed that allow them, never had a problem. You could tell some people were deathly afraid of dogs, especially when they figure out I have a "killer Pit Bull," so I'd be real nice, smile, offer my seat, and leave - I mean, that's some manners, isn't it?

By then, my dog had consumed whatever had hit the floor, anyways. In fact, I had to tell people to please not feed Malia those greasy French fries too much, since they gave her some rather extraordinary gas - she does sleep on my bed with her south end pointed at my head.

In the words of Huckelberry Finn:

"I reckon I got to light out for the Territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally she’s going to adopt me and sivilize me, and I can’t stand it. I been there before."

Sammie that doggie is a "PITBULL"?????

Erk, ugh, yes. A rescue dog that was beat, we think, real timid and is scared of cats. She lets chihuahuas have they way with her. My daughter couldn't handle her in an apartment so guess what? Daddy inherits another dog.

I've never actually picked my own dog, but the labs and potcakes are more my speed.

Pitbulls are some of the best dogs, it's too bad they have such a bad rap. We have several in our rescue group right now (Caramel and Peanut) and they are the sweetest pups. My sister owns one too, and he's a total love bunny. Do research and don't blame the breed, blame the owner. Most of our rescued pits come from really bad situations (starving, malnourished and chemical burns) and still want to please so much. The owners tried to make them mean, but it didn't work.

Of course, potcakes are awesome too! And there are actually some "pitcakes" surfacing that have turned out to be great dogs. Check out this column in the Bahamas Weekly:

We have a potcake. She has some "strange" ways sometimes, but we love her dearly and has given us many enjoyable and laughable moments through the years!

Sammie, sorry to hear, bummer not being able to take the pup to the bar. The places in our area that allow dogs get our business. We love taking the pup with us everywhere.

"PitCakes" are common in Abaco the boys who hunt Hog. they usually mix a potcake male with a Pit. The pups are considered expendable. Mama stays at home to make more pups, and the pups go out after Hogs. The attack instinct, and Pits ability to hold on and still breathe helps them to bring down the hogs. They are a really effective hunting animal. They want to please and know bringing back that hog will make the master happy, so they go after it. The training method is to take it out with a dog that hunts, and let it learn. The pups that pick up on huntimg go home in the truck, the rest are left to die, or even killed.

What kind of demon/person chemically burns an animal? Just saw a pic of one up for adoption in our local paper in CO. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.
