Hi Everyone,

We're doing a half day charter tomorrow for tuna and dolphin and would like to know how much of a tip is appropriate for the hand. Is it a certain percentage of the charter cost or some per diem rate or...?

Thanks very much in advance for any assistance.

Cheers -- SusieAndAl

Around here, it's about 15% if you get good service and there's a good crew hand.

I agree; charter a big boat for $1000/day, the mate gets about $150. Some people pay in advance, and when you do that, make sure you tell him what you expect in terms of your participation, him cleaning the fish, those kinds of issues. In some places it's also proper to tip the captain, then he splits with the crew. If it doubt, just ask.

Thanks very much Sammie and Dr Ralph. If all goes well we'll post a full report with photos!

I'm a small boat guide, so it is not quite the same thing, but my day rate is $500. My average tip is $100.
