View Full Version : Fish
These were both caught on spinning tackle and 15 lb. test line while trolling for Yellowtails, and Muttonfish.
The Amberjack was 22 lbs., and the Rockfish went 18 lbs.
both were delicious!

Man that's good! We caught a really nice Mutton the other day in "that" spot -- and we swear we won't reveal the location to anyone except cash toting and Kalik sharing tourists!)

Do you catch these amber jacks while fishing on the bottom or do you cast or troll?
Henz
The ones in my picture were caught trolling, looks like Crooked Hook was bottom fishing.
Miss Pat,
Looks like just some guy on the dock in the creek at Cherokee.

AJ's are OK eating but more known for their rather intense fight, since they can be deep and are built very strong. I have no idea if they would be associated with ciguatera, since I mainly find them in the Gulf where it is not an issue. Good catch, R, and we sure appreciate the pics here in frosty-land.
I think I need a rock hind now ... :)

We caught this one off of Lynyard Cay in 50'. I had a small fish head on a 4/0 hook, 20-lb spin tackle, just had the rod in a holder when it started to bounce. Almost an hour to get him up, weighed just under 40 pounds. We gave him to the gardener.
AJs, larger cudas, and larger groupers have an increased risk of carrying ciguatera (http://www.rehablink.com/ciguatera/). I know lots of locals eat them, but you are taking a bit of a risk if you do, and that disease is no fun!

Great shot ... I had to laugh when you said you gave the fish to the gardener. I bet he got some really great tomatoes! :D

Fresh Hogfish and Mahi Mahi. The day started off unbelieveable when Susan lands the first fish- a Hogfish on light tackle. She also spotted the Dolphin around the boat a while later and we hooked up two on plugs along with a yellow runner.
Tommy Boy- we've had 2 days of very nice fishing. I did look for lobster tonight after serious taunting to get the Fu$#@ IN the water !. Todays ocean temp is 74F, and it wasn't too bad after thrashing around a bit.
OH- Yesterdays menu was mutton snapper courtesy of Randy a nice 10lber on the grill along with some chunky yellow tails.
Have not gotten a Wahoo but not for lack of trying. The last two days were chamber of commerce days. Unfortunately having camera challenges again, but here are a couple.

Although there very very few reported cases of ciguetera in Abaco, we would not eat an Amberback over 15 lbs. It is just not worth the risk for us. IMHO
Coconutscottage,
Ciguetera is very common in The Abacos. Every year people I know contract it.
To avoid it stay away from all of the large predators of the reefs - Cudas, large Jacks, Grouper, and Large Snappers are the biggest risk.
We eat fish almost exclusively and probably take too many risks, but Amberjacks and Cudas sure taste great.
