Alaskan halibut. They're nicknamed Barn Doors because of the size. They can get even bigger than that! The halibut Rick catches is Pacific (oops or is it California:confused:) halibut which is much smaller, a REALLY big one is 50 maybe 60 pounds. Tastes just as good, well even better IMO because it isn't so big. They are weird looking fish. Flat, speckled grayish brown on one side, white on the other and 2 eyes on one side. Once when we were out Rick caught one so small that the eyes were on both sides!
Ooh, this is making me hungry. Maybe I'll have some tonight with white wine, lemon, butter and capers!:D

I know people up in Alaska, and they take their fishing seriously. Some leave good paying government jobs to go fishing (Palin).
You will never hear them say;
"Let's go fishing, just for the halibut"
(h3ll of it)

Haha! Hey Tina you're right about smaller fish being better than the big monsters. While monster fish count for bragging rights and media exposure, since people are fascinated by them, they taste horrible compared to the medium sized fish. Very large fish tend to get coarse, grainy, and strong tasting. Secondly, large fish are much more prone to have accumulations of toxins such as mercury, histamine, and ciguatera. Thirdly, very large fish are the "breeders" that reproduce much more effectively than the young fish.
I would have let tha fish go after taking some pictures and measurements, "just for the halibut." A nice 25-pounder would have been better on the dinner table. I should know, Rick sent me some. Go daddy, hope he's having fun with the clients today. :)

Actually he went out with the clients yesterday and they caught a nice 17 pounder. The guys had a great time! He's out today with some buddies and as of about an hour ago hadn't caught anything:mad: But there's tons more time left and the weather is gorgeous! Summer has finally arrived!

Rick came home with a 25 and an 18 pounder so we're pretty darned happy. His rigs worked, the boat didn't break down and he didn't end up in jail!
It's all GOOD!
Wish you all were closer so we could share some!
My aunt used to fry it in beer batter. Nothing better.

The word "halibut" is interesting because it comes from some middle Dutch and low German meaning "holy" plus "butt." In this case, "butt" means a flatfish, so it's safe to go back outside now! :D

Campbell's Creek, N.L. (Newfoundland Labrador).
This is on the Atlantic, so Palin can't claim this baby
