Wishing I was in Abaco fishing right now! Sorry Mark....;)

If I might try ... the latest rage on the mainland is jig fishing using knife jigs. It is a physically grueling sport but usually worth the effort, producing much more than the trollers have lately. These jigs are 7 to 12 inches long and use one or maybe two Oriental style "assist hooks" in the front rather than on the tail end. I got this picture from Eastern Tackle in North Carolina.

Physically demanding? Well you let the hook flutter down and then stop where you think you see fish on the depth finder. Then crank like a spotted monkey up a hundred feet or so using a jerky motion and let back down. Bringing up a large tuna, grouper, or amberjack from over 150 feet is quite a workout! But like I say, you will catch more fish. The hooks can be baited with nasties if you so desire, as well.

Weehoo and dodo is probably a different style of fishing, although no reason why you can't catch an occasional one with such a rig.

Hmm, I see some yellow/chart that look great, with some goldens on pink heads. I like to shoot these on an ultra-light 7'6" spinner because I'm not good like you Willie. I have been a fan of weighted hooks lately and making my own, not that I'm any good at it. Nice selection and it looks rather expensive.

Here in Texas, don't forget that the reds, specks, and everything will start running as soon as it cools off, until late October. Fly and line class should be very good when the temps break. You coming to the Rockport area this season? That's only 3-4 hours up the road.

Does the Abaco have the same temperature thang? I mean the fishing is fair enough but the summer doldrums have things pretty slow because it is so hot on the flats.

Expensive? Well, had I purchased them all... yes. Probably in the range of $1000 but since I tied all of them myself they were considerably less expensive. Throw in about 80 hours of labor but it was fun and it's a real kick to catch a bonefish on a fly that you tied yourself.

Actually I was down in Rockport in mid July. It was a tough trip. I limited out on reds 2 out of the 3 days and strung some pretty good trout but it was some hard fishing. It took to 2:00 to 3:00 before I finally limited. But the weather was awesome, the beer was cold, and the shrimp boil (not raw, Teener) was outstanding.

Yes, the hotter it gets the sooner the fishing goes south during the day. Early morning is the best bet.

Nice flies Willy! Rick used to tie his own, he's so into bounce balling now that he just doesn't flyfish anymore. It was funny because when he was tying flies I'd find him going through all my sewing stuff looking for sparkly yarns etc. What's up with that?;)

Now trust me, you and Patti and Peach and Bunny and Pat and all the other forum regular ladies (we love you all, even Gail upstairs!), you are more beautiful than those young babes any day! You're funnier, more world-wise, and have a very dry sense of humor even if you're at Nippers in a thunderstorm. I'm serious. It takes a real man to say that.

That said, just because I'm on a diet doesn't mean I can't read the menu! Beautiful girl for Sapelo Junior there, whoa. Well, if I have my cheater reading glasses on, ya know ... :D

I lift my glass to the beauty of our forum ladies, all of you. You too Tina. I'm not being weird, just being Sammie. ;)

I'd go for that, Mikey, Aubs, Aqua-Man, and little ole Sammie? "Would you like a rum thang while we spin your sheets and towels, mi'lady?"

"Aubs, stop throwing the clothes on top of the bushes, mon, we got ladies here e'en you know dat."

Aqua-Mon: "You want ME to give your wool sweater a Cowboy? Sure, sugar." Wink-wink.

"All right, who put the peppa in the underwear load, boyz? Be nice to them Yahoes e'en if they ain't tippers, will ya. You gonna give somebody the quarms!"

"Hey Pappa Nasty, this is Sammie-Mon on 16. Is water supposed to be shooting out our rooftop like dat?"

"Did we make enuff for a beer break yet? It IS 9 in the mornin' ya know."

"You finish foldin' them Bubby slingshots right nice or I'll open a Kalik with your boonggie!"

"Ugh-oh, conga line, SQUAWK!"

As you can see, our business plan is very well thought-out and detailed. :)

I'm getting the itch and it's time to think of heading to Abaco.
It really doesn't matter when you are able...October thru May can lead to some great bites, but I like to be prepared.

So, I'm thinking of stocking up on a few things to take on our next visit that are always useful...any other ideas ...please chime in.

Iland lures, to be sure...I like them all and in a variety of colors; Leader wire from 70-108#s or #7 through #9: fluorocarbon leader in 40#, 60#, 125# and 200#; ball bearing swivels, 2X hooks from 5/0 to 12/0 and some small moldcraft stuff as well.

The big blue has a vast menu so it's good to vary your spread a bit to see what's out there. I know the wahoo bite is right around the corner.

Da Goose may have some good ideas as well as JB and CR...

Luck,

rs

LOL, is the old boy "camera challenged"? Good to hear from our long lost friend, Rock Steady.

Now people say the fishing is slowed down now, not to pick up until maybe after October when the wahoo return. To that I say nonsense! You can actually fish the waters these days before the cold fronts and easterly rages commence. For today, Rocky Bay and the weather reports show perfect "Chamber of Commerce" weather with sunny skies, 84 degrees F, 10-12 MPH E winds, and 2-3 foot swell heavier 3-5 in the passages on the ebb tide. You can't get much better than that!

And talk about lack of fishing pressure, half the island shops are closed, no tournaments, no cruisers, you have all the Atlantic you want to yourself. No traffic jams of battleship-trollers off Elbow and up and down the drop-off.

Meh, you might have to work for some peanuts, or bring along a downrigger for some 600-foot grouper digging, but I just love ice cream weather. The hot story in Texas is the swordfish are coming back in big numbers, night fishing with rigged squid. I have no idea of local reports off the Abacos for the swords, but they sure are here in the Gulf although I haven't got one yet - hard to find a captain who wants to fish such a boring and "dark side" method. Just last weekend, one fella pulled up 3 dinks from 150 foot on this nice new moon, all released because they're close to the minimum limit, but ... actually got the pictures to prove it!

A few of the boys out of Hope Town have been bringing in a few Hoos. I even managed to get a two pound slab which made some wonderful salad.

Next slab goes on the grill tho. The salad is great, but I prefer Hoo on the grill with hot bird pepper, fresh lime and mayo. Yum Yum.

Tried a new trick that payed off.
Just before I left in Sept the tuna were still biting and they usually come in double and triple hookups. Well by the time you get all 2 and a half in your wondering what got the other half, and always the back half, was it a cuda, shark, hey maybe a wahoo. So I rigged up a short wireline with a snap swivel and hook. I would bring the first, hopefully whole, tuna in hook the rig to the leader and the hook in the tail and drop it back over, work on the other fish and see what happened with my new bait. I did catch a cuda but the other 2 times i got to try it, wahoo....so that's my new MO when I get doubles or better. The activity must really get their attention and bring em up from below. I'll trade a little football tuna for a wahoo any day.
