View Full Version : Cold Front Fishing Advice Needed!

Hi Everyone,

The cold fronts are rolling through and fishing has not been good.

We launched from Casuarina Point yesterday and didn't see a single fish in the canal (that has never happened before)! Spent a few hours around the reefs south of Cherokee and basically got skunked. We're assuming the fish have gone deeper and are somewhat lethargic...is this correct?

Any advice for fishing in this type of weather?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Cheers -- Al

Try fishing deeper, slower, and with real bait or jigs tipped with some bait. Deeper channels and holes anywhere are best. The bite can be very light, a little tippy-tap-tap instead of a solid hook-set. Hope this helps. /s/

Thanks Sam,

We'll give that a try tomorrow.

We were down at the coast one time wading the bay and fishing for reds and everything simply shut down. No activity whatsoever. Heck the wind wasn't even blowing. Seemed like I had been standing there forever without a bite. The sun was beating down. My mind was wandering. I was staring blankly off at the horizon... looking but not really seeing anything. Kind of in a stupor. (My wife would argue that this is my normal state.) And finally... off in the distance... my buddy yells... I GOT ONE!!! Shaken out my trance I looked encouragingly towards the excitement... hoping to see my friend tied into a good fish. Well he did have a nice one but it was an ice cold beer that he was holding up. "Yup... looks like a good one to me", I said. I reeled up and headed back to the boat to join him.

Gosh I didn't know you were into existential moments, Willy!

If I had one more suggestion it would be to find some sea grass next to a deeper channel. Grass is the key. Cast towards the grass to let your lure/bait sink slowly into the deeper water, paying off some line with the current. Repeat. If I tell you much more the fish gods will kill me.

SusieAndAl,

I believe that the fish move out to deeper, warmer water when the cold fronts come in.
On sunny warm days they move back in, but if it stays cool - the fish seem to stay off the shallow flats.
I can remember large scale fish kills in the creeks after prolonged cold fronts.

We caught these on spinning rods out in front of your place.

It has been very cool and breezy but if you venture outside there are possibilities. The wahoo are here as are tuna. We ventured out Monday for a few hours and fished the tide change. We were rewarded with a nice 25-30# Yellow Fin in the box, a smaller one lost at the stern and a couple other strikes.
I'll take the camera along today, and see what's shak'in. Man is that good on the belly!

We gave it a go yesterday for a few hours and had three knockdowns but no joy. Small tuna we think. The seas were wonkee.

They will show some love in due time, you lucky rascal. Our tuna grounds are about 5 hours away on a go-fast boat! Have fun, mon. :D

It was a beautiful day Friday but we had to run to Marsh Harbour to pick up a friend, stock up for this cold front and purchase a birthday gift for the Mrs. etc.....

Once this front clears through the latter half of next week is looking good...or better based on current forecasts.

Today is best left for football and hunker'in down with winds out of the NW at 23 MPH plus and temps. this morning in the high 50s....and rigging stuff...of course!

We'll leave you a few....will be great to see you and Tina.

GO CHARGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tina

PS Our condolences go out to Mike from Boston

Hi & Happy New Year. We've been in Boat Harbour since Dec-fishing has been spotty on flat days-we did get a few Mahi & tuna last week just before the blow working 400' line east of Elbow, but I think you're looking for inshore. A friend also did very well bottom fishing @ North Bar.

Leaving Wednesday-be back Feb and paln a trip to BPS.
