View Full Version : There's a new Sheriff in town!
Last night we had a community meeting that was attended by members of the Hopetown Council, several other representatives and the new Superintendent of Police and Officer in Charge Mr. Noel Curry. I was so impressed by Superintendent Curry that I had to spread the word. One of his highest priorities is to station 2 police officers, full time on Guana Cay. The new Superintendent is coordinating a "Crime watch" group for us and it's a work in progress but I understand that we already have a Chairperson from Guana Cay to organize all of us. Mr. Curry told us that he intended to serve us with care, respect and trust. He was in Freeport for 25 years and just moved to Abaco on Monday of this week. He is very approachable. He even handed out his business card with his e-mail address and phone number. Guess what? He even answered an e-mail that I sent him this afternoon concerning the Crime Watch program. Keep it up Mr. Curry!

It would be great to have police on every Cay. Has there been much crime on Guana? What type?
No, there isn't much crime but when we do have a problem, it takes hours for the police to get here sometimes.

As much as a police presence is needed, it is indeed unfortunate that one IS needed. PatW, thank you so much for the update. The news as of late coming off the Coconut Telegraph has been disparaging. This is a very positive step forward to maintaining (hopefully) all that some, if not all, of us have come to love so much about the Abaco's. Keep us posted, please! Some day we hope to make it back and hopefully the islands will be intact with what we remember so well and have visited so often over the course of many, many years.......the love, the kindness, the openess, the family feel of so many fantastic people.....
I feel the need to explain why I think we need a police presence. We DON'T have a crime wave on Guana Cay! But the island is growing. There are more people and there are more vehicles around and there has been speeders, locals are guilty too. We have stop signs that most ignore, especially by the school corner. Its just time that we start thinking about what the future may bring for this little island. If something does happen, it takes the police, hours to get here and if it happens at night, we don't see them until the next day.

PatW, my family and I have been coming to Guana for several years now and are building a small home to spend even more time. We come in several times each year. Guana is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places on earth. I am certainly glad to know that there will be a trained professional there to help ensure that as more tourists come in the basic courtesies are followed and the basic laws are followed. The stop sign by the school should be stopped at and it is crazy that people don't bother. Each time we come there are more speeding cars. These types of things need to be paid attention to for the basic safety and respect of each other. On the other hand, I think a very delecate balance needs to be struck between making everyone feel safe and confident that help is near by and making people feel like there "needs to be" crime fighters near by. I would love to see more infomation about the community group as it is established and organized. I personally think this will go a long way and if second home owners can be involved, even better. Some of us even have some formal criminal justice training and experience. Can't wait to see how it moves forward. Thanks for bringing the continued updates

Well said Pat. Visitors have to realize this is not a crime zone but progress does bring change and all can not go unchecked.
Thanks,
Jim
