Starboard Tack II

My grandparents own the lot on White Sound where Startboard Tack used to be. I started getting curious about what is happening post Hurricane Floyd. I see lots of pictures and posts showing that most of Elbow Cay is again, for the most part, as I remember it. Any information from Second Homeowners or Locals about who still lives or visits in that part of the island and what is going on (or NOT going on) in the re-building process would be great. I have many fond memories from the 70's right up until 2000 when Floyd hit of what a breathtakingly beautiful, serene, and friendly place Elbow Cay is. I'm glad to see so many people bouncing back again after such a devastating experience.

Hello Starboard Tack, and welcome aboard. We've been staying at Seaspray since just after it opened in '92. Here are some pics of the dune reconstruction after Hurricane Frances in '04; things are pretty much back to normal again.

The Abaco Islands and the people are amazing when it comes to bouncing right back. I was there in Nov. 2004 right after Hurricanes Jeanne & Francis. I arrived expecting to find things in MUCH better condition than I had anticipated. Now I know that those storms were minimal compared to Floyd but it was really surprising to see things carrying on in the true Abacos spirit of things.

Looking back I think the back to back impact of Frances and Jeanne equaled the devastation from Floyd. Fortunately they came post Floyd and most people had done a nice job of rebuilding stronger after Floyd. Frances and Jeanne took less structure because of that. Landwise though the two storms did some amazing damage. We had 7 feet of sand on the front porch.
I found a few of these pics cleaning up my computer... Our Floyd pictures are not digital and are in a box somewhere. It was years before we could even look at them. Floyd was such a surprise coming after decades of relative quiet.

Ya know you are right Brad I saw pics of the pool deck at the Lodge with all of the sand (the pool was full of sand!!) and really expected the place to be in ruins when I arrived. I was pleasantly surprised at how cleaned up the it was. The Edge was closed forever it seemed.
I was just so amazed while riding in the cab from the airport to the ferry dock at how things were so much more in order than I expected them to be. I live in Central Florida and this place was no where near as cleaned up as Abaco. Making my point about the resilience of the good people of Abaco.
