Mostly northerners, including a large Canadian contingent, arrive in the winter. Both boaters, second home owners and renters. The weather is perfect for this group. Days in the 70's and nights in the 60's with an occasional sojurn into the 50's during the hour of the wolf.

The water is warm enough for swimming although some use a wet suit. The marinas, bars and eateries are not overcrowed and many events take place. That being said we do have a parade of fronts out of Fla. that will give us windy conditions for about 3-4 days followed buy a calm period of equal duration. Crossing from Fla. by boat is a "stand by and wait for a window" type of thing unless you are on a real good size vessel and quite experienced.

We went in February one year, and did do some diving, using wetsuits. The water was chilly, but tolerable for wading or a quick dip without wetsuits, and the air temp was fine. We did have a cool snap for a couple days while we were there, and wore light cotton sweaters with shorts. It was breezy, too, but only one day was too rough to enjoy boating. Of course, that was our departure day, and I had to return the rental boat to Island Marine, so I got pretty soaked by the spray from that trip.

Ken--
Based on two recent deleted posts on old board--that one would never see the light of day, but very true.

Well Skip.....it AIN'T political is it? 'Ol Ralph can tolerate some tongue-in-cheek.......especially if it's accurate. Heck, we gotta have a little fun on dis new board......That "bouncy" thang came to mind after remembering a boat ride with my wife on one of those old 17' Privateers. We were on the sea of Abaco between Hopetown and MOW on a particularly windy day. I was laughing my a_ _ off while my wife was getting black eyes. Ken

It really depends on where you live, and what you are used to. I surfed the NJ shore, where the water temps barely reached 70 degrees in August, and spent a summer in CA swimming in frigid water. I now live in FL, and will not go into the water until May, when it reaches 80 degrees. That said, I love Abaco in January! It could be sunny, in the 80s during the day, and get down into the 50s at night. It all depends on the fronts moving through. Water temps will still be warmer than most U.S. coastal waters in mid summer. I've visited Abaco every month of the year. I'd opt for January or February when the weather might be iffy, over July or August when the weather is boring, and hot, hot, humid and hot.

i spend the winter in Abaco every year but cut and run for Oregon before summer comes. I'm flummoxed that so many people consider June, July and August The (prime) Season on Abaco. Get real !! HOT AND HUMID are the operationg words. The only explanation i can think of for so many people preferring the summer season is that it has something to do with school being out or power skiffing without wind and waves. ??????

I still am a fan of Late October..the water tems are refreshing and you really dont need that wetsuit yet unless you are in the water for a very extended period of time.

I thinkl it depends on where you come from what time of year you prefer. Being from the NE, I want to be out of here in the winter. We use to do Jan/Feb but than come back to depressing March, with hit or miss weather. I find it frustrating after being away in summer like weather to return to that cold again, so we have now changed to Feb/Mar hoping that March will be over with quickly. Of course April and May can be cold too.....can't win. But quite honestly it beats being in the snow and ice. We extended this past year and came home early April was so nice to have winter over with. I guess I would be a great candidate for being a "snowbird". Summer I love being here at the Jersey shore. It is great even in early fall. So if you don't like winter....go in Feb! Gets one out of being in a rut. January we still coming down from the holiday season so it is tolerable. Good luck and have fun! To us, after June, it is too hot there!

Right, like "Winter Texans" there are a whole flock of peeps called "Winter Abaconians." Florida is the same way. Their migration paths are usually from the north, just like our fine feathered friends. Also, let us not forget our friends that migrate all the way from Great Britain and such foreign places.

You can tell the Canadians because most are tough-guy types, and don't wear a shirt when it's over 60 degrees. The Canadian women wear shirts but hate it! I find them quite pleasant and funny, not a bad one in the bunch.

You can tell some of us crazy Texans and Okies because during football season we wear a jock supporter on the outside of our bathing trunks ... :)
