Rental Boat/Ferry Question

Hello all, we will be there come May 18, and renting a boat. The question is, we have a bunch of friends coming in on May 19, and some of them will be on the AA flight that lands at 5:30. I see that the last ferry leaves for Hopetown around this time, so there's no chance of them making that ferry ride. We will b e renting a 24-26' boat, would it be cool to go pick them up? Don't know the rules about what time the boat needs to be in, or what time it gets dark around there, but I would rather not have to navigate in the night, if at all possible. Thanks again.

You should have plenty of time before it gets dark. Abaco will be in DST. Never ever take the boat out at night!

A quick tip for this is to plan ahead. Have your friends pack the big, heavy contractors garbage bags to wrap their luggage in and easily accessible rain coats. Also having them give you a call on the taxi's vhf when they are on their way to the meeting place can help ease some nerves and help to confirm that the taxi driver is taking them to the correct public dock.

Depending how big a "bunch" it is also possible to charter the ferry for a reasonable price. With a group of more than 4 it really isn't much more than the standard individual fare/person ($23 v. $15 according to current info on their website). You have plenty of advance notice to give and can make the arrangements directly with Albury Ferry. Info about chartering is on their website. You don't want to take the risk of overfilling a rental boat with people and luggage. An accident would be a horrible way to start your wedding week! And - with the ferry - you have a designated driver so your guests can travel with confidence in their skipper. Better safe than sorry! Their website is www.alburysferry.com.

We have the same logistical problem in 3 weeks and clearly we have light issues which are far more pressing. Boating without navigation lights in shallow water should not be taken lightly.

Most boat rental companies will not entertain having boats out after hours. In some cases it's the same as driving in snow - it's not your driving that's the problem but that of other people. Many local boats do ot have nav lights and career around at 30 knots as they know the water. At night without a moon - The Sea of Abaco can be hard to naviagate by sight due to the enclosed water and you being surrounded by lights on land.

We have chartered the Albury ferry for $140 and there are 3 of us, our pick up is after dark at 6:30pm. It sounds a lot for a 15 minute journey but it is safe and not sorry!

We have picked up friends a number of times in our rental boat, and it's nice to welcome them to Abaco at Curlytails with a cold Kalik, then hop in the boat and go to your cottage or inn. However, you do need to be cautious about the number of people and amount of luggage they'll have. We are very familiar with the routes between our dock and MH, which also helps.

Also, not knowing in advance what the weather will be like can make a big difference, if you're picking up several groups during that day. Windy, choppy conditions will slow you down considerably, and may even prevent you from making the trip to MH. I'd have the ferry arranged for at least the late group.

We chartered an Albury Ferry to take my wife and I to Lubber's with all our stuff, as the weather was, well, monsoon-like. $110.00. No problems- except the slippery dock in the rain and the Kalik wasn't cold yet...

we chartered albury from MH to GGC last march as we had a few coming in late enough that they couldnt make the 530 ferry i think it was 140, and, we lucked out as a group of 4 construction workers needed to get over and paid for 1/2.

I think Capt Plug at Sea Horse Rentals will also run an after hours "ferry" and cheaper than Albury.

We are flying into Treasure Cay April 27 and going to Hope Town. I can't seem to find any info about ferry service. There are 4 of us. Anyone?

Your best bet would be to fly into Marsh Harbour, then to Hope Town. If you are already commited to TC you will have to take a taxi to MH then Albury Ferry to HT. Car rental might be possible, don't know if they will do a one way deal or not.
www.alburysferry.com will give you the ferry schedule. I believe that a cab from TC to MH will run you around $85 each way, plus tip, for two people, might let you slide for four.

Ferry Charter

Earlier this week I emailed Albury's Ferry about this new late flight from AA. A charter will cost $165.00 MH to GGC for 1 -4 people. The new scheduling from DFW makes it nearly impossible to get to and from Guana in a day. I am still looking for options and hoping AA will change their flight times again.

Huh? We're scheduled on the 7:20am flight (there's a 6am also) out of DFW that gets us into MIA at 11:00. We're booked on the 11:50 flight from MIA to MHH. Unless they've totally gotten rid of those flights it shouldn't be that difficult for you to get to Guana in a day without chartering a ferry. Now from San Diego there's no way unless we take a red eye.

I'm thinking I may need to call AA just to make sure we still have a flight!

For May the flights have changed. Even if I took the 5:45am into MIA arriving at 9:30, the MHH leg leaves at 10:30am. You can not depend on a on time flight and running to make a flight an hour later. I am just sick about this. I keep looking and waiting for a change. If you do the 10:30am you get to MHH at 5:30. Then it is a charter ferry. I guess better thatn nothing. Going home isn't any easier either.

Well we're hoping that, once at MIA, 50 minutes will be enough to get to the AE gate. I've been told that it should be enough especially since there have been upgrades at MIA. We'll probably check the weather the night before and if it looks like there might be delays we'll try to get on the earlier flight out of DFW. Anyway that's the plan!

Send a message via MSN to Patti Puzo
Our reservations changed by 20 minutes (later) from DFW to MIA, and then the flight back, out of MHH will 1:50 instead of 1:35pm.
